We're a mess, we were supposed to go on vacation last week, but on Saturday, our 9 year old male cat had a bad seizure. Yowling, collapsing, convulsing, hyperextension, lasting over a minute, and disorientation that lasts a few minutes.
He had two severe (lasting 2-3 mins, recovery over half a day) in the past, about 4 years ago, which was after we used air fresheners (we did not know better at the time). We got rid of those, as well as candles and certain really smelly chemical cleaners.
Then on Sunday again. Monday 3 times, booked vet for Tuesday. Tuesday 2 times in the morning before the vet, bloodwork and general wellness check done, also booked a neurologist for Oct 1st. During the visit, he was fine, but after getting home, had 2 more times before bedtime. Went to ER in the morning, but had 2 more seizures in the morning, once in the carrier. Vet called to confirm that blood test were inconclusive and it was generally 'boring' in the best way.
He was prescribed Keppra 3x every 8 hrs at the ER, and after 1st dose, he didn't have one until midnight. Less yowling, but still the same seizure, stiffening, dilated eyes, stretching, sometimes front paws paddle. But the recovery time was less, under a minute or two before he was slightly back to normal, just sluggish, perhaps due to the medication.
After their 3rd dose of Keppra in this morning, he had 2 more seizures, so back to the ER, where he was prescribed Phenobarbitol with a large initial load (15mg 4 times over 24 hrs, then to 7.5mg every 12 hrs) to stop the cluster seizures. After his first dose of PB at 6pm(along with Keppra at 6:30/2:30/10:30), he had another seizure, and once the meds kicked in, he is so out of it, slow, staring into space, and not the same cat that he was just last week. It's incredibly saddening but as long as the seizures do not continue, and he has a healthy life, right?
The dose times will be tough, especially for us who RTO. 6am. 6:30am. 2:30pm. 6pm. 10:30pm. We love him so we will go through with this until the end.
I would love to hear any stories and experiences of your pets that had seizures and how you accommodated the medication and caretaking. I tried to look online, but only ended up doomscrolling.
